Merlin RTA

I got this Augvape Merlin RTA yesterday from eciggity. It came with no extra tank or parts bag, I sent a message to them and they're going to mail them out. Cool. Code is reddit10 for 10% off.
So I don't know if the box I got was destined to be a problem child from the beginning, but for the price, I expected better machining. I had to file down the grub screws and a bit on the inside of one post. It was cutting through 26g K like buttah. Really minor thing, but I have the needle files already.

After a brief rocky road, I gotta say...this is awesome. Kinda what the ACE wanted to be, but killed it with too many parts. Easy to build and wick and I'm all about dedicated single coil tanks with no plugs. I made the mistake of fully opening the juice flow control and it leaked pretty bad. Closed it off, filled it again and just cracked it open to a little half-moon shape. Perfect for 50/50. No leaks now, really good vapor and flavor. I'll probably get another one.

I did 26g .8Ω and used treated xc-116 (like ready x wick) that's about 2.5mm I guess. Usually I go with cotton, but was checking this out for @moecat, and because I have it. Works well!

    Really intriguing! :)

Did you have to fluff the ends of the wick at all?

Isn't that a porn industry job? Wick fluffer? But no, there's a little oval-ish channel in there and the wick kinda mooshed itself in it. Also I forgot to mention the coil is 3mm.

Thanks, Becca. Are all your comments based on using that wick, or did you also use cotton/rayon? Roxy's builds have all used rayon spread out over the top of the juice more than down into it. I wonder if that has anything to do with the JFC fussiness you ran into.

Otherwise still sounds really good to me, and I agree about the dedicated bottom air single coil like this and Serpent. BTW how are you and your Serpent Mini getting along?

I didn't use cotton yet, no. Next time I will (or if I get another one sooner), so I'm not sure if it's the wick or the 50/50 liquid. All I know is I'm glad I sit new tanks on top of something without batteries for a little while. lol btw- it sits just fine on a Pico being 23mm
The SM is a great little tank, we get along well. The Goblin minis are jealous. Love them but they tend to piddle a bit.

Good to hear, and I'm not surprised about the jealous GMs. I'd love to hear a vape comparison of SM with Merlin if you're using the same coil.

Interesting. I've thought of using xc-116 (I've got plenty if @moecat is interested in trying some) in a tank but was concerned about leaking. I'd like to hear your final opinion. And I stopped using it because I wasn't sure if it was worth the fuss (the ends fraying, only having two diameter options, etc.) Unless there's more options now?

Hi moe:)I use to use readyX way back when and they advised against fraying the ends. Has to do with how the weaving of the rope and the hollow center sucks up the juice.

Before I thread them through the wire, I cut the ends at 45 deg. angles. Then I cut them again so that end up being more or less square. No issues with fraying.

Our least favorite vendor has them available at 3.5 mm, but I've found the 2.7 mm diameter to be sufficient. I don't drip either, so that's another reason I don't need anything wider.

I'm sure Jeremy is on it "like a cheap suit"! The trend towards larger diameters is forcing Jeremy to pump his wick

I did do the 45 degree cuts but didn't think to retrim them flat again. So, are you saying that you've used rope in your tanks?

    Yeah I dont use cotton

It's not the same coil, but it's close. Merlin has the 26g 3mm and the SM is 26g 2.5mm about the same ohms. And SM has cotton wick. But but but...I'm finding a comparison difficult. The chimneys are vastly different. The Merlin's is huge to me. I thought that would make the flavor kinda muted and harsh, like I find the Velocity with the same build. But it's the opposite. So the taste is really good on both, but for vapor production, Merlin wins. From a MTL viewpoint.

Probably I don't need to ask, but your xc-116 is heat treated, yes? You're not using it raw? It's very dangerous otherwise. /worrywart

@glassgrl did you have problems separating the center section from the glass tube? Wondering if I should freeze this for a few minutes so that things unscrew more easily. I was able to get the deck unscrewed with no problems, thankfully.

Never mind ... whew! Was finally able to get everything separated

Thanks. Both sound good. Got the SM coming; still haven't jumped on Merlin.

You said from a MTL viewpoint. Do you vape that way most the time? Considering the RTAs you've been going for, I assumed you DTL'd most of the time.

Oh good. A little boogery aren't they? I used a pair of needle nose in the fill holes for leverage to get it separated. Nice turn around time from efun, right? :)

Yes, I vape MTL pretty much all the time, I just don't open the afc that much and it works well. Granted, some of the RTAs I've been trying haven't worked all that great for me, but some of the old standbys that I like aren't readily available anymore and I'm broadening my horizons.
